Democracy Redefined

[A DEMOnstration of aristoCRACY]

Once I was told, 'Tomorrow looks bright'
Now I see the bright side always faces away from me,
Each passing day my sun hides behind a cloud.

My cloud lost its silver lining, and opted for cheaper coal.
A promise is always made to me, they have plenty of them,
None of them passes the incubation stage.

Of all happy days I have spent,
None ended with a day-long smile on my face,
Everything on my mind is awful, they have taught me independence.

Vulnerable to their trick, I fell victim,
Oblivious of my state, I claimed independence from my neighbour,
To me he was made a stranger, he is of a different tongue, I was told,
Excluded him from my list of love.

Known him for ages, always ready to come to help,
I turned on him, almost a decade ago, and threw him out,
Left his house in flames, as my brainwashed body was thirsty for revenge,
Left me with no neighbour, with no helper, no comforter
Ego gone, and so are the politicians, nay cheats,
Do they bring food to my table, as my neughbour used to?

Utter a single word to console me, the word is peace,
Show me a single voice in the political pack that carries the word.

Shame on them, who carry all our votes,
Licking our memories and filling us with sweet empty words,
Offloading our minds by replacing worries with fairy tales,
Working with their brains to turn our friends into foes,
Leaving us divided, knowing that divided we can't stand against them,
Yokes of tribalism; thats what they give us for free.

When shall we get back our brains?
How hard we promise ourselves, that we won't give them a chance
Enter another half decade and we give them another chance,
Not knowing it is the same old dog with a new bark.

When shall the majority have a say,
Equal to these aristocrats?

What shall I do to get my neighbour back?
Each day my sore gets more painful, the sore of my heart,
Ready to be enlarged by the shocking daily news,
Everyday folks taking away lives, as if they were on offer.

God help us out, for all we do is brought down by the few,
In fact, a handful, just that they outsmart us all,
Veer our minds from violence and bloody tribalism,
Endangering our pride, our survival, our lives.
No more bloodshed is my dream.

To me all I have is ours, because we are the nation, we own the country,
How we live, is what determines our future's future,
Old hatred pulls us back; listening and not thinking is our sweet poison,
Unveiling our weaknesses, draining us of God-granted potential.
Grant me words to say, for my heart threatens to break,
Help me achieve a single dream, just one, just a single plea,
To build one Kenya, a true bloodless Kenya, a patriotic mind,
Sow peace and love, united by our unity, let patriotism be the keeper.
